The threat of online security: How safe is our data?

by Vee Lean, Tan

First question, you are the member of how many websites?

Second question, do you ever think deeply what are the security issues behind at the moment you disclose your personal and cofnfidential data?

Most of the people today have less awareness on the threat of online security. People had ignored the possibility of their data being exposed to other people or website, and this is why the number of threats on online security had increased in this recent years.

The internet users usually submit their personal data such as name, contact numbers, email address, home address, or sometime even the credit card details. However, we do not really concern on how well of our data have been taking care of. This weak online security consciousness by both parties (website & users) eventually giving the hacker and anonymous websites the opportunity to gain our confidential data.

According to the Britain newspaper, the Britain’s government is now taking steps to protect electronic transactions and help the users to face the growing of cyber security threat. This is because the internet is now contribute 50 billion pounds of transaction annually and the information being obtain illicitly is becoming a serious issue nowadays.

Even the Britain government had admitted that they have been repeatedly embarrassed by losses of data, such as when tax authorities lost data on 25 million people exposing them to the risk of identity theft and fraud. So how about our country? Do we safe from the online security threat? I believe that it is now a good time for us to reassess the vulnerability of online security. It is not merely your data will be used for spam purposes but people might also using your name to commit illegal activities without your knowledge.

Do you watch “Eagle Eye” before? If you do, you will be astonished by how much a computer can do. Although the movie is a bit exaggerate, but you would not know this may come true in the future. Therefore, do not simply disclose your personal information on the internet. We keep saying safety awareness around us, so as during the moment when you putting up your data in the internet.
